Word Search – Word Searches

A “word search puzzle” is a game that can be enjoyed by both children and adults. A word search is a grid of letters where you are supposed to find the hidden words in the grid. Generally, you can find these words up, down, diagonally and even backwards in such directions.

Advanced Word Searches

Advanced word search puzzles tend to include longer words, which are hidden in much larger word grids. Also, the incidence of words that are diagonal and spelled backwards are much higher, which increases the difficulty level of the puzzle dramatically.

Free Word Search – Free Word Searches

You can find advanced versions of “free printable word searches”, if you would like the top challenges in the word search game. For example, there’s one prominent website that offers free word searches that has “medium” and “hard” word search puzzles. Among the hard category are subjects like “American Operas”, “Computer Whiz”, “It Must Be the Chemistry” and “Astronomical Delights”. Solving these word puzzles will require a knowledge of opera, computer terminology, chemistry and astronomy.

There are pop culture word searches online, too. For instance, you can find word puzzles such as “The Beach Boys”, “Anyone For Tennis?”, “Desperate Housewives” and “Sports Athletics”. On that subject, if you find a word puzzle called “Spacey”, it’s likely to be about space terminology and not Kevin Spacey.

Word Searches For Children

A childrens word search puzzle is going to involve shorter words like “dog”, “cat” and “ball” and mostly consist of words either up-and-down or crossways. The word grids on childrens’ word searches tend to be much smaller, so the child gains a sense of accomplishment while brushing up on their spelling skills and vocabulary.

Some restaurants will pass out word searches for children eating at the restaurant, to pass the time until the meal is served. I remember as a child playing the word searches provided to customers by Pizza Hut. The words to search for had to do with the Pizza Hunt experience: pizza, cheese, fork, spoon and drink being examples of the words used.

Online Word Search – Online Word Searches

Let’s get back to the free word searches you can find on the internet, though. There are a lot of word puzzle websites that offer free downloadable word searches. Two of the most promiment are puzzle-club.com and abcteach.com. “Puzzle Club” focuses on word searches for word enthusiasts and word search hobbyists. “ABC Teach” focuses on teaching children vocabulary and spelling through fun word games.

You can also find niche word search puzzles. There’s one prominent word search game site called “Bible Gateway Dotcom”. This word search site offers word searches that involve Biblican names and terms from the Bible. “Christ Notes Dot Org” is a similar type of website.

The Library of Congress website used to offer advanced word search puzzles for free, but I’m unable to find them at the moment. If I get new information about the Library of Congress word search letter grids, I’ll update. They were some of my favorite word searches online.
